Background

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations employers have a legal duty to make suitable and sufficient assessment of risks to the health and safety of employees and all those who may be affected.  Employers are obliged to appoint a competent person to assist in meeting this legal requirement.

Programme Structure

The course will give a broad introduction to the main areas of risk assessment using scenario based learning to raise awareness and develop understanding of how to deal with hazards and risks in the workplace.  The duration of the course will be delivered over one day. (6 hours)

Outline

The aim of this award is to enable delegates to understand the basic principles of risk assessment so they can contribute to the process within their own working environment.

The Risk Assessment course comprises of three outcomes:

1. Appreciation of the main causes of accidents/ill-health & their implications for people at work & how risk assessment links to accident prevention

2. Application of the legal requirements for risk assessment as stated under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations

3. Demonstrate the principles of risk assessment by using a range of methods and record the outcomes

Assessment

Assessment for this award is by means of continuous self-assessment, tutor review and feedback of activities undertaken & a multiple-choice knowledge ‘test’ covering the three outcomes. The test is a paper-based format & computer marked. Those who achieve the required standard will receive the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 Award Principles of Risk Assessment. Course complies with GDC Verifiable CPD Requirements.

Delegate pre-requisites

No specific prior qualifications are required for those undertaking this course. However, the nature of both the learning and assessment required is such that delegates who have achieved the CIEH Foundation Certificate or Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace or an equivalent qualification will benefit from their existing knowledge and understanding of occupational health and safety and the fundamental aspects of risk assessment.

Delegate specification

The course is designed for those who have a responsibility to monitor health and safety systems and procedures within the workplace for example:

  • Practice nurses
  • Receptionists
  • Practice Managers
  • Employers
  • Dental Technicians

The responsibility may be for the whole workplace or a specific department/area.

Progression

For those individuals with a greater responsibility for managing health & safety Management of the Principles and Practice for Risk Assessment is the route of progression
